Protect Nature & Defend Wildlife
Katrina Shadix is an Eco-Warrior and the Executive Director of Bear Warriors United, a nonprofit dedicated to defending Florida’s wildlife and ensuring peaceful coexistence between humans and nature. Inspired by the controversial 2015 Florida bear hunt, Katrina made a promise to fight tirelessly to prevent another hunt from ever taking place in the state. Since then, she has actively lobbied against legislation that threatens wildlife, including harmful and antiquated trapping mechanisms.

Beyond advocacy, Katrina is committed to hands-on conservation efforts. When there are no active legislative threats, she focuses on community outreach, administering bear-resistant trash can straps to reduce human-wildlife conflicts and educating Floridians about the importance of protecting native ecosystems.
Katrina began her career in animal rights advocacy during the 2016 bear hunting season, successfully organizing a campaign that led to the passage of the Anti-Bear Poaching Bill in 2020. Her efforts have since expanded to addressing Florida’s nutrient pollution crisis, particularly in the Indian River Lagoon. She has spent the past two years lobbying in Tallahassee and speaking at local county commission meetings to push for stronger policies against nutrient and chemical pollution. In response to the devastating manatee mortality crisis, she founded the Stop the Starve Campaign, advocating for an expansion of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission’s (FWC) feeding program to include nutrient-rich aquatic plants instead of relying solely on romaine lettuce.

In addition to leading Bear Warriors United, Katrina serves on several environmental boards, including The Central Florida Expressway Environmental Advisory Group, and the Environmental Advisory Board for Seminole County, where she serves as Chair. She is also the President of the Sustainability Leaders Initiative. Through her relentless advocacy, grassroots efforts, and policy work, Katrina continues to be a leading force in the fight to protect Florida’s wildlife and natural ecosystems.
